Why You Should Give Meditation a Try

Since forever, I’ve been this Energizer Bunny, bouncing off walls with excitement for the next big thing. And let me tell you, I love it! It’s like a constant adrenaline rush, ready to tackle anything that comes my way.

But you know what? That high-energy lifestyle eventually caught up with me. I’d be zooming around like a maniac all day, then suddenly hit a wall at 3 pm. I’d perk up again around 6 pm, only to stay wide awake till midnight… Talk about a rollercoaster! It turns out, my poor adrenals were taking a beating. Although I was heading for burnout, caffeine was my makeshift solution—not the best idea, as we all know.

Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

That’s when meditation swooped in like a superhero. Now, picture this: an undiagnosed ADD dude like me trying to sit still and look inward. Yeah, it was a bit like herding cats. But I knew meditation could help corral my scattered attention, rev up my nervous system, and sharpen my focus. And boy, did it deliver! Along the way, I discovered bonus perks like smoother digestion, steady energy levels, and better listening skills in my relationships. So now, I’m all aboard the meditation train, baby!

At first, I was clueless about what to do or if I was even doing it right (thank goodness for meditation apps, am I right?). But I set myself a challenge: meditate every damn day for a week. And you know what? It worked wonders! I became less reactive and more chilled, and my sleep improved. Oh, it was like diving into a pool of marshmallows—fluffy and dreamy. Plus, I found myself craving an early bedtime. Trust me, that was a major win for a night owl like me.

But here’s the real gem I uncovered: Meditation transports you straight into the “rest and digest” zone—the sweet spot for healing, recovering, and processing stuff. Say goodbye to that jittery, adrenaline-fueled energy. Then, say hello to a deep-rooted, earthy calmness that doesn’t rely on caffeine or mind tricks to kickstart your day. I like to call it the “calm as a Hindu cow state”—catchy, right?

Now, when’s the best time to meditate, you ask?

I prefer kicking off my day with a zen session as soon as I wake up or unwinding with it when I get home from work in the afternoon. Why not before bed? Well, you want to reap those meditation benefits while still being awake, don’t you? Give it a whirl!

Top Tips:

Ready to dip your toes into the meditation pool? Here are some to dig into:

  • Hang a “Do Not Disturb, Meditating in Progress” sign on your bedroom door. Trust me, interruptions are a mood killer.
  • Silence that phone! Or at least switch it to silent mode; you don’t want a random notification crashing your meditation party.
  • Park your bum on a chair or bed, but avoid lying down. Sit on a cushion for extra comfort, and lean against something to support your back. I’m all about the couch life.
  • Start with guided meditations. There are tonnes of awesome apps out there to hold your hand through the process. Once you’re feeling confident, go solo—no music, just you and your thoughts.
  • Set a timer. Meditation newbie? You’ll be amazed at how fast time flies when you’re in the zone. And resist the urge to peek at the clock!

Remember, it’s a practice, not a performance. Cut yourself some slack; nobody’s perfect. With time and practice, you’ll master the art of meditation like a boss.
